Summary of Duties:
The Pierce County SNAP-Ed Extension Coordinator is responsible for leading the development and implementation of culturally sensitive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) nutrition education. For this purpose, direct and indirect education, policy, systems and environmental (PSE) and public health approaches are used for obesity prevention among low-income and qualifying audiences in Pierce County.
The Extension Coordinator conducts community needs assessments to inform the design and implementation of programs. Programs will adhere to SNAP-Ed guidelines. The Extension Coordinator consults with community agencies, groups, and individuals to develop nutrition education systems tailored to community and individual need; leads, trains, and mentors contract staff and volunteers within the organization and advises clients on the application of program information; and organizes, coordinates, monitors, evaluates, and reports on program activities. This position reports directly to the SNAP-Ed Program Manager, works closely with other Extension staff, SNAP-Ed staff, and community partners to ensure activities meet community need and are appropriate within FNS guidance for SNAP-Ed. This position contributes to university, state, local, and national recognition of WSU Extension and SNAP-Ed as an essential nutrition education resource and contributes to the recognition of WSU as a premier Land-Grant University.
This is a temporary position which may end at the close of the Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 9/30/2023. Renewal is dependent on satisfactory performance and background check, the need for Extension to complete the project, and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment. Funding has been renewed successfully for several years and we expect funding to continue to be renewed.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• Washington State Food Handler’s Permit within 14 days of hire.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within targeted counties.
• While using a private or WSU-owned vehicle for official business, must have current automobile liability insurance (meeting the requirements described in RCW 46.30.020 and RCW 46.29.090).
• Ability to work a flexible, yet structured schedule with occasional evening and weekend shifts to meet the needs of program partners and grant requirements.
